Tigers Suffer Season-Ending Loss To Seahawks
ANACORTES, WA - After a courageous comeback from an early 3-0 deficit, the Burlington-Edison Tigers were defeated 5-3 by the Anacortes Seahawks Monday night in the Class 2A District One Baseball Tournament at Alton Daniels Field.
Though disappointed to see their season come to an end, B-E should be extremely proud of their 17-6 season record, which far exceeded the pre-season expectations of many opposing coaches and area media, who tabbed the Tigers (with only five seniors) to win no more than 10-12 games.
“Our guys had a great season,” head coach John Thurmond said Tuesday. “We had an awesome group of seniors that led the way and the younger guys meshed-in very well. This group was an absolute pleasure to coach and I am as proud of this team and what they accomplished as much as any team we’ve had, and we have been blessed to have had some really great teams.”
Early in Monday’s game, it appeared as though the Seahawks would have little trouble with the Tigers. Anacortes followed a two-run first inning homerun with another run in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead, but Burlington-Edison was far from finished.
Cash Cullop, who led the team with a .370 batting average, got the Tigers going with a base hit to lead-off the third inning and scored B-E’s first run when Asher Moe blasted the first of his two doubles for the first of his two RBI. Garrett Dehon drove-in Moe with a base hit to make the score 3-2.
The Tigers pulled even at 3-3 in the fourth inning when Wyatt Dehon singled and later scored on Moe’s sacrifice fly. Unfortunately for B-E, they left the bases loaded in both the second and fourth innings, and had 11 LOB in the game.
“We had some key hits and simply needed just one or two more,” Thurmond stated, “Anacortes is good. It was a hard fought game on both sides and we lost to a good club.”
Following an uncharacteristic slow start, Burlington-Edison pitcher Zak Fleshman showed why he was the Tigers’ ace all season, retiring 12 straight Seahawks from the last out of the second inning through two outs in the sixth.
“Zak came back on three days rest and threw really well. He got roughed-up a bit early but settled in and threw a gem,” Thurmond said.
Fleshman’s flashy season stats included a 7-3 record, an exceptional ERA of only 1.12 and a 0.88 WHIP. He had 54 strikeouts and allowed just 10 walks in 62 innings.
Sterling statistics posted by the Tigers’ other senior starting pitcher, Asher Moe, included a 1.81 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and only nine walks in 46.1 innings.
Freshman Ethan Schmitz was also magnificent on the mound, with a 3-1 record, 33 K’s in 22.2 innings, leading the team in both ERA (0.93) and BAA (.156) while also earning B-E’s only save of the season.
“I will really miss the senior guys, but I can’t wait to see what our next group can accomplish,” said Thurmond. “My assistant coaches were excellent and gave me and our players everything they had,” he added.
Other outstanding performances included catcher Hudson Baker’s team-leading 24 RBI, .317 average, and only 6 passed balls in 143.1 innings, extending a tradition of Burlington-Edison excellence behind the plate.
Cullop also led the Tigers in runs scored (26), singles (21), stolen bases (6) and triples (4), while anchoring the infield with consistent and sometimes spectacular plays at shortstop.
Sophomore third baseman Isiah Aguilar led the team by playing 157.2 innings, his .362 BA was second best for B-E, and he pounded opposing pitching with a .500 average (18-36) during his 10 game season-ending hitting streak.
Along with his pitching prowess, Moe matched Cullop for the most hits (27), batted .351 (third behind Cullop and Aguilar), led the team with 10 doubles and was second behind Baker with 19 RBI. He also hit safely in 10 of B-E’s last 11 games.
Burlington-Edison was 17-6 (.739) overall, with a fifth place finish in the district tournament, and the Tigers were 11-4 (.733) in the Northwest Conference, which was also fifth best.

Burlington-Edison Tigers Are All Around Terrific In Stopping Storm 9-1 At District Baseball Tourney
ANACORTES, WA - An excellent effort by everyone who played propelled the Burlington-Edison Tigers to a 9-1 victory over Squalicum Saturday afternoon in the Class 2A District One Baseball Tournament.
Burlington-Edison excelled in every phase of the game, banging out 12 base hits as Asher Moe and Ethan Schmitz were fantastic on the mound and the Tigers’ defense committed only one error.
The first four batters in their lineup were especially effective for Burlington-Edison, combining for seven hits, five RBI and five runs scored.
Leadoff hitter Cash Cullop was 1-3 and scored twice, number two hitter Isiah Aguilar continued his assault on opposing pitchers by going 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI, Asher Moe - batting third - was 2-3 with an RBI double, and cleanup hitter Hudson Baker was 2-4, scored twice, and drove-in three runs, including a two run triple that got the Tigers going in the first inning.
“Our first four hitters had great games. That’s what we want and that’s why they are hitting up there,” B-E head coach John Thurmond said after the game. “We hit the ball really well and had big hits at key times.”
Aguilar has hit in nine straight games, going 17-33 (.515) while Moe has hit safely in nine of the Tigers’ last ten games. Baker leads B-E in RBI, with 24 in 22 games.
Moe’s work on the mound lasted six innings in which he allowed four hits, two walks and struck out two. Schmitz subdued the Storm in the seventh inning by throwing eight of ten pitches for strikes and striking-out two of the three batters he faced.
“Moe was excellent. He had good control throughout the day,” said Thurmond. “Schmitz came in and did what he does.” (Throwing strikes and getting strikeouts).
Zak Fleshman added two hits and a RBI while Wyatt Jacobs, Beckham Stallings and Max Hergessell each had a hit. Wyatt Dehon scored twice, with Hergessell and Jacobs also scoring runs while Stallings and Garrett Dehon each drove-in runs.
“I really liked the way we bounced back after a tough loss on Thursday,” Thurmond said. “This team has a lot of heart and our guys were ready to play.”
The Tigers (17-5) will be back in action Monday, May 11, at 6:00 pm against Anacortes, with an opportunity to avenge a 5-2 loss to the Seahawks in early April.

Strong Opposing Pitching, Uncharacteristic Unearned Runs, Result In 2-1 Tigers’ Loss To ATM
ANACORTES, WA - A three hit complete game performance by Cooper Thompson allowed the Archbishop Thomas Murphy Wildcats to edge Burlington-Edison 2-1 Thursday afternoon in the Class 2A, District One Baseball Tournament at Daniels Field.
Though Cooper wasn’t overpowering, with only one strikeout, he received excellent support from his defense as the Wildcats ended an eight game Tigers’ winning streak.
“We actually hit the ball hard, but we just didn’t have much to show for it, as their defense played really well and they made a bunch of good plays,” Burlington-Edison head coach John Thurmond said Thursday night.
Tiger Zak Fleshman was equally as impressive as Cooper in also pitching a complete game, allowing five hits without a walk and striking out four, but didn’t receive the support in the field or at the plate that he was accustomed to in winning seven of eight decisions entering the game. His stellar stats include allowing only seven walks in 56 innings pitched this season.
“Zak was great,” Thurmond stated, “He deserved to win and pitched well enough to win but unfortunately we couldn’t scratch out a couple more runs for him.”
As a result of two untimely Burlington-Edison errors, both of the Wildcats’ runs were unearned. ATM scored with two outs in the first inning, when they followed an error with back-to-back base hits, and they scored again in the sixth inning after an error, stolen base and a base hit.
On the bright side for the Tigers, third baseman Isiah Aguilar continued to tattoo the baseball, going 2-3 to extend his hitting streak to eight straight games, during which he is 15-29 (.517).
Catcher Hudson Baker had the other hit for B-E, while Wyatt Jacobs scored his team’s only run.
With the loss, the Tigers (16-5) must now win four straight elimination games to advance into the state tournament, which Thurmond feels they are certainly capable of doing after compiling winning streaks of five and eight games during the season.
“I’m proud of the way our guys competed today and I’m confident we will play well Saturday,” Thurmond concluded.
Burlington-Edison will face Squalicum at Daniels Field in Anacortes Saturday afternoon. The Tigers defeated the Storm twice this season by combined scores of 19-0.

Moe, Aguilar Continue To Pound Opposing Pitchers As Tigers Ground Golden-Eagles 7-2
FERNDALE, WA - Asher Moe and Isiah Aguilar extended their hitting streaks to eight and seven games, respectively, as the Burlington-Edison Tigers won their eighth straight with a 7-2 victory at Ferndale Monday night in Northwest Conference high school baseball.
Moe was 2-4 with 2 RBI and scored twice, while Aguilar was 3-3 with 3 RBI, and both had a double. Aguilar is second on the team with a .339 batting average, with Moe right behind, hitting .338. The Tigers are led by Cash Cullop’s .391 average.
Moe got Burlington-Edison going with a two out, two run double in the first inning, scoring Wyatt Jacobs and Cullop after Jacobs was hit by a pitch and Cullop drew a walk. The inning ended with the Tigers leading 3-0, as Moe scored on a single by Garrett Dehon, who also had two hits to raise his batting average to .327, which is fourth best on the team.
After Ferndale scored twice in the second inning, Aguilar’s double drove-in Hudson Baker, who was hit by a pitch, in the third inning to give Burlington-Edison a 4-2 lead.
Cullop scored three runs in the game, with his second coming in the fifth inning when he raced to first base for an infield hit, stole second and scored on an error that allowed Moe to reach base. Moe then stole second, scored on Aguilar’s single, and the Tigers led 6-2.
In the seventh inning, Cullup reached base on an error, one of five committed by Ferndale, and scored his team’s seventh run on Aguilar’s sacrifice fly.
Highlighting their hot streaks, Moe is 13-33 (.394) with 13 RBI, and he’s driven in a run in seven of the Tigers’ last eight games. Aguilar has been even hotter, hitting .500 (13-26) with 10 RBI during his seven game streak.
“Isiah is on a tear and he’s seeing the ball really good. It probably looks like a beach ball to him,” Burlington-Edison head coach John Thurmond said Monday night. “Asher has also been hitting the heck out of the ball. They are two of the many reasons why we’ve been able to win our last eight games.”
A Tiger trademark for five decades, outstanding pitching has also been a key to the team’s success this season, including Monday night when four pitchers - Max Herrgesell, Ethan Schmitz, Jacobs and Cullop - combined to allow only three hits and three walks, with 11 strikeouts.
Schmitz earned the win to raise his record to 3-1 by pitching 2.1 innings without allowing a hit or walk, and striking out four in lowering his ERA to 0.97.
Led by seniors Zak Fleshman and Moe, Thurmond said all of his team’s pitchers have been throwing really well.
“They’ve really learned how to pitch, how to change speeds and hit corners,” Thurmond stated. “Coach (Jim) Gutierrez has been a big help, as they’ve all gotten better, been really coachable, and it’s been fun to watch.”
With the victory, the Tigers wrapped-up their regular season with a record of 16-4, 11-4 in the NWC.
“We’ve had an outstanding regular season and won more games than a lot of people probably thought we would,” Thurmond said. “We feel really good about our team and the way we are playing going into the district tournament.”
Burlington-Edison will face Archbishop Murphy in their first postseason game at 3:30pm Thursday, May 7, at Daniels Field in Anacortes.

Tiger Nine Works Overtime To Stop Storm 3-0
BELLINGHAM, WA - An exceptional pitching performance by Asher Moe, an outstanding outfield throw, and clutch hitting in the 11th inning were key factors in Burlington-Edison’s hard-fought 3-0 victory at Squalicum Thursday night in Northwest Conference high school baseball.
Moe and Squalicum starter Cameron Schmitt matched pitches through nine scoreless innings.
Moe allowed only one walk, struck out seven and held the Storm to just five hits while pitching into the 11th inning to earn the win. Lowering his exceptional season ERA to 1.91, the Tigers’ senior star threw 81 of 108 pitches for strikes.
Storm star Schmitt recorded 13 strikeouts, also walked only one, and gave up just three hits before being relieved to start the tenth inning. He left the game after throwing 106 pitches, 75 for strikes.
With Schmitt gone from the game an inning earlier, Burlington-Edison finally broke through to score three runs in the 11th inning, making a winner of Moe and allowing Ethan Schmitz to earn the save with a strikeout to end the game.
Garrett Dehon led off the 11th inning with a walk and was sacrificed into scoring position by Max Herrgesell. One out later, three Tigers came through with back-to-back-to-back clutch hits.
Wyatt Jacobs, who earlier made the defensive play of the game when he released a rocket from center field to throw out a runner at home plate in the sixth inning, hustled to first base for an infield hit to keep the 11th inning alive and bring Burlington-Edison’s leading hitter, Cash Cullop, to the plate.
Cullop didn’t disappoint, dropping a single into right field to score Dehon with the game’s first run. With runners at the corners, Tiger catcher and clean-up hitter Hudson Baker bashed a line drive double to drive-in both Jacobs and Cullop.
Baker and Jacobs each went 2-5 at the plate for Burlington-Edison, and Baker’s two RBI raised his team leading total to 21 in 19 games. He also leads the Tigers with seven doubles and is second on the team with a .333 batting average behind Cullop’s crazy .393.
Moe and Isiah Aguilar also added doubles for Burlington-Edison, with Moe extending his hitting streak to seven straight games, and Aguilar to six.
Not coincidentally, the Tigers have won seven straight games to raise their season record to 15-4, 11-4 in the Northwest Conference.
Burlington-Edison will wrap-up the regular season at Ferndale Monday, May 4. The Tigers will play their first round game in the District Tournament Thursday, May 7, opponent and game time to be announced.

Fleshman’s Pitching, Hitting and Burlington-Edison Infield’s Bats Beat Bellingham 4-0
BURLINGTON, WA - Senior pitching ace Zak Fleshman was masterful on the mound and combined with his supporting cast of infielders for all nine Tiger hits and four runs batted in as Burlington-Edison defeated Bellingham 4-0 on Senior Day Tuesday afternoon in Northwest Conference high school baseball.
One of five Tigers’ seniors playing their final home game, Fleshman blanked the Bayhawks by scattering four hits while striking out nine and walking just two on his way to a second straight complete game shutout.
In raising his season record to 7-1, Fleshman lowered his microscopic ERA and WHIP to 1.00 and .853, respectively, with his pinpoint accuracy allowing just seven bases on balls in 49 innings pitched.
“Zak was really strong again at both the beginning and the end. There was an inning or two in between when he threw a few more pitches than he’s used to, but he got another shutout and another win,” Burlington-Edison head coach John Thurmond said on the field following the game. “He’s been awesome for us all season.”
Fleshman also had three hits and a run batted in, while Burlington-Edison third baseman Isiah Aguilar was awesome again, following his four RBI performance Thursday at Meridian by blasting two doubles and a triple, scoring twice and driving in a run. A six game hitting streak has allowed Aguilar to raise his average to .302, as five Tigers are now batting above .300.
“Those were big games today for Isiah and Zak,” Thurmond observed. “Isiah’s been hitting the ball really hard and Fleshman also had three hits along with being really good on the hill again.”
Shortstop Cash Cullop had another multi hit game for the Tigers, going 2-3 to raise his team-leading batting average to .411, first baseman Asher Moe was 1-2 with a RBI and is second on the team, hitting .339, while second baseman Garrett Dehon also drove in a run. Dehon is tied for third on the team with catcher Hudson Baker, as both are batting .326.
What appeared to be the biggest crowd of the season was in attendance to celebrate the final home game for the five B-E seniors, with Zeb Rocha starting in right field to join his classmates Baker, Cullop, Fleshman and Moe.
“They’ve had a great season and hopefully it keeps going for a while,” Thurmond said of his seniors. “They won all but one game at home this year. We always take pride in playing well at home and they certainly did that.”
The Tigers have now won six straight games to raise their season record to 14-4, 10-4 in the Northwest Conference.
Burlington-Edison will wrap-up the regular season with two games in Whatcom County, playing at Squalicum Thursday, April 30 and visiting Ferndale next Tuesday, May 4.

Aguilar Awesome As Tigers Trounce Trojans 8-0
BELLINGHAM, WA - After a week of diamond dominance by seniors and freshmen, two sophomores and a junior brandished the big bats as Burlington-Edison mauled Meridian 8-0 Thursday afternoon in Northwest Conference high school baseball.
Sophomore third baseman Isaiah Aguilar drove in half of his team’s runs with a pair of two run singles, his classmate, Max Herrgesell, ripped a two run pinch-hit double to cap a five run fifth inning, and junior Wyatt Jacobs was 2-3 with a walk and a run as the Tigers won their fifth straight overall and third in a row by a score of 8-0.
“Those middle classes really came through for us,” said Burlington-Edison head coach John Thurmond. “Along with the multi hit games by Isaiah and Wyatt, Max came off the bench with a big double. Everybody is contributing right now and it’s really fun to watch.”
Not to be outdone by his 10th and 11th grade teammates, senior Asher Moe was magnificent both on the mound and at the plate for Burlington-Edison.
Moe earned his third win of the season by scattering four hits in his six innings of work, striking out three Trojans without allowing a walk, which has become a trademark of the Tigers’ top two starting pitchers, as Moe and Zak Fleshman have combined to walk just 11 opposing hitters in 71.2 innings, an unreal statistic at any level of baseball.
“We’ve been doing a lot of work and really emphasizing staying low in the zone and getting ahead early in the count,” B-E pitching coach Jim Gutierrez said. “Anytime you get that lead off runner on, like lead off walks or two out walks, more times than not those runners are going to come around to score, and keeping those walks down has really helped us as a team to win a lot of ball games.”
Along with his excellent pitching performance, Moe was 3-4 at the plate and got Burlington-Edison on the scoreboard by driving-in their first run with a third inning double. His courtesy runner, Ethan Schmitz, followed Cash Cullop across home plate with the third run of the inning on the first of Aguilar’s two, two-run singles. Schmitz also scored during the Tigers’ five run fifth inning.
Cullop was 1-2 at the plate to raise his team leading batting average to .396 and touched home twice to maintain his team lead in runs scored at 19, which is two ahead of Aguilar.
Garrett Dehon is second on the team with a .349 average after an RBI single, and the freshman second baseman also scored the eighth and final run of the afternoon.
The Tigers have won 13 of 17 games this season, and are 9-4 in the NWC.
Burlington-Edison will honor their five seniors prior to their final home game of the season Tuesday, April 28 at Tiger field, with the first pitch scheduled for 4pm.

Fantastic Four Are Superheroes In Tigers’ 8-0 Win
LYNDEN, WA - Burlington-Edison’s four senior stars shined bright Tuesday afternoon as the Tigers crushed Lynden Christian 8-0 in Northwest Conference high school baseball.
Pitcher Zak Fleshman, his battery mate Hudson Baker, shortstop Cash Cullop and first baseman Asher Moe each played key roles in the Tigers’ second straight 8-0 victory and fourth straight win.
Fleshman was the most fab of the four, painting a two-hit complete game masterpiece that included six strikeouts and only one walk.
Reminding this aging reporter of former Seattle Mariners star Jamie Moyer and current star George Kirby, Fleshman’s pinpoint control has led to him allowing just five bases on balls in 42 innings pitched this season.
In raising his season record to 6-1 and lowering his ERA to just 1.17, the Tigers’ ace was perfect through four innings and retired the first 14 Lyncs before allowing a base runner, earning well deserved accolades from B-E head coach John Thurmond.
“Zak was in total command the whole game,” Thurmond said. “He kept them off-balance by changing his speeds, which is something he does really well, and he threw a lot of strikes.” (64 in 91 pitches)
Along with Baker and Moe, Fleshman also drove-in two runs, and along with Baker and Cullop, he added two hits. Both Baker and Moe also hit doubles for Burlington-Edison.
After suffering through three games two weeks ago during which they scored a total of only two runs, Thurmond likes what he’s seen from his hitters recently.
“We’re swinging the bats much better now,” Thurmond stated. “Our guys are getting more and more comfortable at the plate and it has been paying off.”
Cullop was 2-4 to raise his team leading batting average to .392 and he also leads the Tigers with 17 runs scored after crossing home plate twice Tuesday.
Baker’s 2-3 at the plate left him hitting .366, which is second on the team, and he leads B-E with 19 runs batted in.
Burlington-Edison has historically been blessed with some outstanding catchers and Thurmond agrees that Baker has continued that great Tiger tradition.
“To have good pitching performances, you’ve got to have a great catcher, and Baker’s been doing it for us from both sides (defense and hitting) all year,”Thurmond said. “He’s having a really nice season.”
Two freshman, Beckham Stallings and Garrett Dehon, continue to impress, as all nine Tigers contributed to their seven walks, eight runs and nine hits.
Stallings and Garrett Dehon each scored twice, while Wyatt Dehon walked twice and scored a run, Isaiah Aguilar drove in a run with a hit, and Wyatt Jacobs added a walk.
Burlington-Edison is 12-4 for the season, 8-4 in the Northwest Conference. Lynden Christian was 12-1 to start this week, but after losses to Anacortes and the Tigers, the Lyncs are now 12-3 overall, (9-3 NWC).
B-E will go North again Thursday, April 23 to tangle with the Trojans at Meridian High School and the Tigers will play their final home game of the season (Senior Day) next Tuesday, April 28 when they host the Bellingham Bayhawks at 4pm.

Burlington-Edison Blows Away Hurricanes 8-0
BURLINGTON, WA - Scoring early and often, The Burlington-Edison Tigers earned their third win in three days by blanking Mount Vernon Christian 8-0 Friday afternoon at Tiger Field.
Senior catcher Hudson Baker again showed why he bats in the cleanup slot for Burlington-Edison, driving in a pair of runs to increase his team leading RBI total to 17 for the season.
After going 1-2 with a walk, Baker is now batting .342 for the season, which is the third highest average on the team. The B-E backstop is one of five Tigers hitting over .300 for the season, and he’s also been outstanding on defense, allowing just five passed balls in 91 innings played behind the plate.
Burlington-Edison pitchers Max Hergessell and Ethan Schmitz teamed-up to throw a three-hit shutout. Hergessell started the game and pitched four innings, followed by Schmitz, who struck out six Hurricanes in his three innings of work.
Showing patience at the plate, the Tigers took advantage of four walks, along with Cash Cullop being hit by a pitch, a Hurricanes error and a passed ball to score four first inning runs.
“They’re a good team, but their guys had a hard time throwing strikes and gave us a lot of opportunities,” Burlington-Edison head coach John Thurmond said on the field following the game.
Beckham Stallings led off the second inning with a walk and stolen base for B-E, Isiah Aguilar followed with a base hit, and Cullop was plunked by a pitch for the second straight time to load the bases.
Baker blasted a sacrifice fly to center field to give Burlington-Edison a 6-0 lead and Asher Moe followed with an RBI single to put the Tigers up 7-0.
Batting behind Baker in the five slot, Moe has been bashing the baseball for B-E, raising his average to .306 by going 4-10 with five RBI in the last three games.
Wyatt Jacobs led the team with two of the Tigers’ seven hits Friday. In the last three games, Jacobs and Garrett Dehon have both gone 4-9 at the plate, allowing Dehon to raise his already impressive batting average to .351, which is second best for Burlington-Edison behind Cash Cullop’s .383.
“It’s been a really good week for us. Two big league wins and a non conference one today. That’s a good week and that’s what we wanted,” Thurmond stated.
The Tigers are now 11-4 for the season and remain 7-4 in the Northwest Conference.
Burlington-Edison will play two games in Whatcom County next week, visiting Lynden Christian Tuesday, April 21 and motoring to Meridian Thursday. April 23.

Moe & “Money” Sweet As Honey In 4-2 Tigers Win
LYNDEN, WA - A second straight outstanding complete game by a senior starting pitcher along with an inspiring performance by their infield anchor led the Burlington-Edison Tigers to a 4-2 victory over the Northwest Conference leading Lynden Lions Thursday afternoon in high school baseball.
Winning pitcher Asher Moe was excellent, allowing only two earned runs, one base on balls, and he had three strikeouts, two of which ended Lynden threats with men on base.
“Moe threw very well, the best I’ve seen him pitch,” Tigers’ head coach John Thurmond stated Thursday night. “He’s throwing two pitches for strikes, keeping hitters off balance, and is really coming on at the right time.”
Moe also supported his pitching with a pair of hits and drove in the second Tigers’ run in the third inning.
Meanwhile, Cash “Money” Cullop’s experience and hard work payed-off for Burlington-Edison both at the plate and in the field. The senior shortstop led the Tigers with two RBI and three hits to raise his team-leading average to Ted Williams territory.
Cullop is now hitting .400 for the season, while Williams was the last major-leaguer to exceed that lofty level, hitting .406 by going 6-8 during a doubleheader on the final day of the 1941 MLB season.
On defense, where he has been solid all season, and with Lynden leading 1-0 in the first inning, Cullop started a 6-4-3 double play to end the Lions’ threat.
As has been the case during the Tigers ten wins this season, two freshman were also big contributors for Burlington-Edison. Second baseman Garrett Dehon was 2-2 at the plate with a walk and scored twice, while left fielder Beckham Stallings added two of the Tigers’ 12 hits.
“We are finally starting to see some better at bats from our hitters,” Thurmond said. “Cullop, Moe, Garrett and Stallings all had big hits for us.”
Isiah Aguilar, Hudson Baker and Wyatt Jacobs also had hits for B-E, with Jacobs adding insurance in the seventh inning by driving-in the fourth Tigers’ run.
The win was a big one for Burlington-Edison (10-4 overall, 7-4 NWC) defeating the Class 2A league-leading Lions (11-6, 9-2 NWC) on their home field.
“We beat a good team tonight that or guys get to feel really good about,” Thurmond concluded.
Burlington-Edison will wrap-up the week by hosting the Mount Vernon Christian Hurricanes on Tiger Field at 4pm Friday.

Seniors Shine As Tigers Tame Golden-Eagles 3-2
BURLINGTON, WA - Two of the five Tigers who will be trading baseball hats and gloves for graduation caps and gowns in two months were key contributors to Burlington-Edison’s 3-2 win over Ferndale in Northwest Conference high school baseball Wednesday afternoon at Tiger Field.
Senior starting pitcher Zak Fleshman earned his fifth win in six decisions by allowing just one earned run during a complete game performance that included six strikeouts without allowing a walk.
The Tigers’ accurate ace has given up just four bases on balls and struck out 33 in 35 innings this season, sporting a stingy 1.40 earned run average.
“Zak threw really good today,” Burlington-Edison head coach John Thurmond said. “Ferndale is a very good hitting team and he made it really hard on them.”
While Fleshman was grounding the Golden-Eagles from the mound, Senior first baseman Asher Moe drove-in two of the three Tigers’ runs, including the eventual game winner in the fifth inning.
“That’s what we want our seniors to do,” Thurmond stated. “He (Moe) has been working hard and is getting real close to where he wants to be.”
Along with Moe, five other Burlington-Edison batters each had a hit in the game, including shortstop Cash Cullop, who leads the team with a .366 average, catcher Hudson Baker, who drove home the Tigers’ first run, center fielder Wyatt Jacobs, second baseman Garrett Dehon, and left fielder Garrett Stallings.
Stallings also made back-to-back catches to end a Ferndale threat with a runner on second in the sixth inning, recording the third out on a fielding gem with a fine running catch of a line drive.
“He (Stallings) is playing really well for us out there,” Thurmond observed. “He’s a freshman and future wise he will probably play a lot of infield for us, but he has done really, really well for us in left field this year.”
After victories in eight of their first nine games this season, the Tigers had suffered three consecutive losses before getting back on track with Wednesday’s win.
“I thought we really battled today. Again, it didn’t come easy, Ferndale’s good, and it was a big win because we needed to stop that three game skid,” Thurmond concluded.
Burlington-Edison raised its season record to 9-4, 6-4 in Northwest Conference play, while Ferndale fell to 6-5, 6-3 in the conference.
The Tigers will travel to Lynden to play the Class 2A NWC leading Lions (9-1, 11-5 overall) at 4pm Thursday afternoon before returning home to play their third game in three days when they host the Hurricanes from Mount Vernon Christian at 4pm Friday.
MVC is coached by former B-E player and coach Andy Hanson, who will bring his team to Tiger Field for their first ever baseball game vs. Burlington-Edison.

B-E Hitters Humbled As Mariners Maul Tigers 8-0
BELLINGHAM, WA - The Tigers’ roar was reduced to mere murmurs as two Sehome pitchers combined on a one-hitter in the Mariners’ 8-0 victory over Burlington-Edison Tuesday afternoon in Northwest Conference high school baseball.
Freshman Beckham Stallings broke up Garrett Gibbons’ bid for a no-hitter with a fifth inning line drive single to left field, but he was the lone Burlington-Edison base runner to reach scoring position and was left stranded at second base to end the Tigers’ only offensive threat.
By that time, the Mariners had already built a seven run lead as the first four hitters in the Sehome lineup combined for nine hits and four RBI off the first three of four Burlington-Edison pitchers.
Wyatt Jacobs was the best of the Tigers’ pitching quartet, needing only 11 pitches to shut down Sehome without a hit in the sixth inning, which included one strikeout and ended on a 6-4-3 double play from shortstop Cash Cullop to second baseman Garrett Dehon to first baseman Ethan Schmitz.
“Sehome always plays us tough, especially up at their field,” observed Burlington-Edison head coach John Thurmond. “What can you say about a one-hitter other than their pitchers were outstanding.”
After three straight losses in which they scored a total of just two runs on eight hits, Burlington-Edison will be anxious to get their bats back to hitting following six days off for spring break.
“This is a great group of boys who love to play baseball together and I’m sure they’ll be ready to roll next Tuesday,” Thurmond said.
Burlington-Edison (8-4 season, 5-4 NWC) will host Ferndale (6-4, 6-2) Tuesday, April 14 at Tiger Field. The first pitch is set for 4pm.

Seahawks Stymie B-EHS Bats In 5-2 Win
ANACORTES, WA - Following five consecutive victories in which they averaged 11 runs and nearly 11 hits (10.8) per game, Burlington-Edison lost their second straight start Monday afternoon in Northwest Conference high school baseball, as Anacortes tamed the Tigers by a score of 5-2.
The Seahawks scored solo runs in each of the first, third and fourth innings to lead 3-0 before B-E broke an 11 inning scoreless streak with a run in the top of the fifth, only to have Anacortes counter with two runs in the bottom half of the inning for a 5-1 lead.
The Tigers scored again in the top of the sixth inning before the Seahawks secured the win by blanking Burlington-Edison in the seventh inning.
The loss followed a 2-0 defeat to Mount Vernon Friday afternoon, but for the second straight game, Tigers’ head coach John Thurmond wasn’t disappointed with his team’s effort.
“We’ve played two really good teams these last two games,” Thurmond said Monday night. “Those are the two best teams we’ve played so far this season, and we weren’t out of either game. We just couldn’t come up with big hits at the right times.”
Burlington-Edison had four hits, one each by Hudson Baker, Asher Moe, Wyatt Jacob’s and Beckham Stallings.
Baker’s double drove-in Stallings with the first B-E run and Moe scored the second Tigers’ run on a RBI groundout by Zak Fleshman, who, after four straight wins, suffered his first defeat of the season on the mound to fall to 4-1.
“Zak didn’t throw bad at all,” said Thurmond, “He wasn’t his sharpest but he pitched well enough to give us a chance.”
Burlington-Edison (8-3 overall, 5-3 NWC) will travel to Bellingham Tuesday afternoon to play the Mariners (8-4 season, 5-3 NWC) at Sehome High School, where the first pitch is scheduled for 5 pm.
The Tigers will resume play after the spring break by hosting Ferndale at 4pm on Tuesday, April 14.

Bulldogs’ Swanson Blanks Burlington-Edison 2-0
BURLINGTON, WA - Mount Vernon delivered Burlington-Edison a dose of its own medicine with a 2-0 victory in Northwest Conference high school baseball Friday afternoon at Tiger Field.
Stellar starting pitching and timely hitting had taken the Tigers to five straight victories before the Bulldogs turned the tables by using that same recipe for success.
It wasn’t a case of B-EHS playing poorly, rather it was a day when the defending Class 3A State Champion Bulldogs were just a bit better.
“We made a couple of base running mistakes, but other than that, I thought we played really well, Tigers’ head coach John Thurmond said during a post game interview. “It didn’t come easy for us today, but we kept battling ‘til the end and put ourselves in a position to tie it there in the seventh. We were just one hit away.”
While starter Asher Moe pitched well for the Tigers, allowing two runs on six hits in five innings, the Bulldog’s Connor Swanson earned the win with an outstanding outing.
The Mount Vernon moundsman allowed just three hits, struck out six Tigers and walked only one in a seven inning complete game performance.
Freshman Tiger Ethan Schmitz showed great potential, striking out three Bulldogs in pitching two innings of hitless relief.
Burlington-Edison had trouble with the number seven and eight hitters in Mount Vernon’s lineup as Kaiden Anderson and Brady Peterson each drove in a run for the Bulldogs.
“They are really good,” Thurmond said in showing a lot of respect for the Tigers’ arch rivals. “They have a good run of guys right now, they’ve worked hard and Tony (Mount Vernon head coach Wolden) does a heck of a job over there. They will be really tough when it comes to the state tournament again this year. We were right there with them, though,” Thurmond concluded.
Shortstop Cash Cullop had two of the Tigers’ three hits to raise his team leading batting average to .438 and was also excellent defensively, as was right fielder Max Herrgesell, whom the Bulldogs kept busy throughout the game.
Mount Vernon is now 7-1 this season, 4-0 in Northwest Conference games, while Burlington-Edison fell to 8-2, (5-2 NWC).
The Tigers will travel to Anacortes to play the Seahawks Monday, April 6 at 4:30pm before going to Bellingham on Tuesday, April 7 to play the Mariners at Sehome High School (5pm).

Burlington-Edison Bats Lambaste Lakewood 21-1
ARLINGTON, WA - The Burlington-Edison Tigers combined 11 hits with 12 bases on balls to score 10 runs in the third inning, followed by nine more in the fourth frame, en route to a 21-1 victory over the Lakewood Cougars in Northwest Conference high school baseball on a wet Wednesday afternoon.
Asher Moe paced the Burlington-Edison hit parade by going 3-3 and was one of three Tigers, along with Cash Cullop and Isaiah Aguilar, to score three runs.
B-E batters finished the game with 14 hits and were walked 13 times by six Lakewood pitchers.
Leadoff hitter Cullup raised his batting average to .414 with a pair of hits, including his fourth triple of the season, to score Beckham Stallings with the first of those 10 runs in the third inning, and the senior shortstop led the Tigers with 3 RBI.
Stallings had a play day at the plate, going 2-2 with two RBI and two runs scored, and combined with fellow freshman Ethan Schmitz in left field for three hits, four runs and four RBI in four at bats.
Every Burlington-Edison starter had at least one base hit, including yet another ninth grader, Garrett Dehon, who raised his team-leading batting average to .474.
Not to be outdone by the Tigers’ exploits at the plate, pitching ace Zak Fleshman raised his record to 4-0 and lowered his minuscule ERA to 0.30 by scattering five hits over five innings without allowing an earned run. The senior starter has allowed just one earned run in 23 innings this season.
The victory was Burlington-Edison’s fifth in a row, raising their season record to 8-1, 5-1 in the Northwest Conference.
The Class 2A Tigers will face one of their toughest tests of the season Friday afternoon when they host their arch rivals, the defending Class 3A State Champion Mount Vernon Bulldogs (6-1, 3-0 NWC) at Tiger Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 pm.

Tigers Top Mount Baker 7-0, Raise Record to 7-1
BURLINGTON, WA - The Burlington-Edison Tigers baked another batch of their recent recipe for success, mauling Mount Baker 7-0 Monday afternoon in high school varsity baseball at Tiger Field.
Sophomore starter Isaiah Aguilar tossed the first two innings, extending the streak of Tigers’ starting pitchers to 21 straight innings without allowing a walk, working with Wyatt Dehon and Cash Cullop to allow just one hit to the Mountaineers.
Cullop (1-0) earned the win by pitching a nearly perfect final three innings, striking out four without allowing a hit nor a base on balls, and he also combined with Aguilar for four of Burlington-Edison’s five hits in the game, all of which went for extra bases.
“Cash doesn’t get a chance to pitch much but he’s got a strong arm and he throws really well,” said Tiger pitching coach Jim Gutierrez. “He would pitch more if he wasn’t so good at shortstop. He is so valuable as the senior leader of our infield and has made several outstanding plays for us.”
Gutierrez also complimented his other two Monday moundsmen, saying, “Wyatt Dehon pitched well. He just hasn’t had much of an opportunity. Isaiah is also one of our top throwers and we need to get him more innings. We are going to need those guys come playoff time, but it’s been really hard to get work for them when our starters are throwing gems.”
“I’ve gotta hand it to all of our pitcher's,” Gutierrez concluded, “They are working their tails off while playing other positions and trying to get time on the mound.”
Burlington-Edison scored a run in each of the first, second and fifth innings before wrapping-up the win with four runs in the sixth.
Cullop led-off the game for the Tigers with a perfectly placed triple, his third of the season, out of the reach of both the Mountaineers’ second baseman and right fielder, later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Wyatt Jacobs.
Aguilar started the second inning with a line drive double to right field and scored on Max Herrgesell’s two-out double to center.
Beckham Stallings reached base on an error to lead off the B-E fifth inning and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
The Tigers took advantage of the exit by Mount Baker starting pitcher Tyson Barksdale in the sixth inning. Barksdale battled his way through 5.1 innings, striking out 10 Tigers before being forced to leave after throwing 104 pitches, just one shy of the maximum of 105 allowed by high school rules.
Cullop’s two run double was the big blow for Burlington-Edison in their four run sixth inning outburst. The senior speedster is now hitting .400, with 10 hits in eight games and a team leading slugging percentage of .720.
The victory was the Tigers’ fourth in a row, raising their season record to 7–1, and their Northwest Conference record to 4-1.
Burlington-Edison will play at Lakewood Wednesday afternoon before returning home for their annual showdown with arch-rival and defending Washington State Class 3A champion Mount Vernon on Friday. Both games are scheduled to start at 4 PM.

Burlington-Edison Baseball Blanks Bruins
EVERETT, WA - After two straight great starts by seniors, an outstanding outing by freshman Ethan Schmitz was supported with another big inning by Burlington-Edison’s bats as the Tigers beat the Cascade Bruins 9-0 in high school baseball Friday night at Funko Field.
As excellent as seniors Zak Fleshman and Asher Moe were on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively, Schmitz’ effort was exemplary. The ninth grader faced just two more Bruins’ batters than the minimum of 21 in pitching a seven inning complete game, scattering a mere three singles, with no walks and five strikeouts.
Late Friday night, Burlington-Edison head coach John Thurmond stated, “We were not shocked by Ethan‘s effectiveness, but we don’t expect him to do that every time he pitches, either.”
Observing that his three starting pitchers this week combined to throw 19 innings with zero walks, Thurmond said, “That’s a big reason why we’ve been successful these last three games. It’s a lot easier to play defense when your pitchers aren’t giving away free passes.”
Schmitz wasn’t the only freshman to shine bright Friday night, as his classmates Garrett Dehon and Beckham Stallings were both great at the plate.
Dehon led a 13 hit Tiger attack by going 4-4 with a run scored and an RBI while Stallings was 1-2 with a sacrifice, a walk, and also scored a run.
“Those three guys keep proving that they’re worthy of playing at the varsity level,” Thurmond observed. “They were our leaders tonight, and our upperclassmen have really done a great job of accepting them and showing them what it takes to play Tiger baseball.”
Other highlights for B-E included leadoff hitter Cash Cullop, who scored twice and whose two-run triple was the big blast in a six-run Tigers’ sixth inning.
“Cullup is our most experienced player,” said Thurmond. “Cash worked really hard in the off-season and it’s really showing in his performances.”
Moe also scored twice and was 2-3 at the plate and sophomore Brayden Arendse’s seventh inning pinch-hit single was his first varsity hit.
“Our team really enjoyed the hit by Brayden and the kids had a lot of fun playing in that ballpark,”(which is the home of the Everett AquaSox) Thurmond concluded. “It was a treat for sure.”
The victory was the sixth in seven games this season for Burlington-Edison. The Tigers will host Mount Baker Monday afternoon, with the first pitch set for 4pm.

Tigers Defeat Cubs 12-5 In Diamond Gem
BELLINGHAM, WA - A seven-run fourth inning and a second straight strong performance by a senior starting pitcher were the keys to Burlington-Edison’s 12–5 win over Sedro-Woolley Thursday afternoon in Northwest Conference high school baseball at Joe Martin Field.
The Tigers combined five walks with five hits, the biggest of which was catcher Hudson Baker’s three run double, during that decisive fourth inning to take a 9-0 lead over the Cubs, which was more than enough for pitcher Asher Moe to earn the win.
The 6’-5” Moe stood tall in raising his record to 1-1, allowing just two earned runs and five hits in a five inning outing that ended with him striking out the final batter he faced.
Moe also didn’t allow a single base on balls, which was the second straight game in which the Tigers’ starting pitcher accomplished that rare feat.
“Moe pitched really well,” Burlington-Edison head coach John Thurmond said last night. “Sedro-Woolley is really good offensively and we (including pitching coach Jim Gutierrez) are very happy with the way Moe threw. It takes a lot of pressure off our defense when our pitchers throw strikes and have quick innings.”
Baker and freshman Beckham Stallings both had two hits to lead the Tigers, with Baker lifting his lofty batting average to .467 and his team leading RBI total to 10 in six games.
Thurmond stated that Stallings continues to show maturity for a freshman, and along with his two hits he scored twice and also threw out a Cubs’ runner at third base.
“I also want to recognize the Dehon brothers (Junior Wyatt in right field and freshman Garrett at second base),” said Thurmond, “who both made highlight reel worthy catches for us.”
Along with his fine pitching performance, Moe also had a hit, a run and an RBI. Third baseman Isaiah Aguilar had two RBI for the second straight game, and he, along with shortstop Cash Cullop and the Dehon brothers, each added a base hit to the Tigers’ nine hit total.
The young Tigers, with only five seniors on their roster, are now 5-1 this season (3-1 NWC).
Burlington-Edison will travel South Friday night to face the WESCO 3A Cascade Bruins on Everett Memorial Stadium’s Funko Field, where the first pitch is scheduled for 7 PM.

BURLINGTON, WA - A stellar performance by senior star Zak Fleshman, both on the mound and at the plate, led the Burlington-Edison Tigers to a 6–2 victory over Nooksack Valley Tuesday afternoon in varsity high school baseball at Tiger Field.
Fleshman was excellent on the mound, allowing only five hits and one earned run. He needed just 70 pitches, 53 of which were strikes, and struck out four Pioneers without allowing a walk while tossing a complete game.
“He’s always right around the plate and is a very efficient finesse pitcher who is usually ahead in the count,” said Tigers’ head coach John Thurmond. “He’s our number one pitcher and we expect that kind of performance from him.”
Third baseman and cleanup hitter Isaiah Aguilar was 3-4 with a double and two RBI to lead a 13 hit Tiger attack.
Catcher Hudson Baker was 2–3 with a double and also drove in two runs hitting sixth, while Fleshman, batting fifth, ripped a pair of doubles and was hit by a pitch In reaching base three times, which led to courtesy runner Jaxon Brown scoring half of the Tigers’ six runs.
“The middle of our lineup was really good today and swung the bats really well,” Thurmond said. “Aguilar is definitely our three or four hitter and we expect him to drive in runs,” Thurmond added.
The Tigers’ veteran leader also stated that shortstop Cash Cullop played excellent defensively while adding two hits and scoring a run from his lead-off spot, and said Baker was great behind the plate, including gunning down a Pioneer base stealing attempt for the first out of the first inning.
After allowing a lead-off triple that led to Nooksack Valley’s first run of the game, Fleshman followed Baker’s thwarted base stealing attempt by striking out the Pioneers’ number three and four hitters to end the first inning.
Brown scored in the second, third and fifth innings before Burlington-Edison put a vice grip on the victory with a three run sixth inning.
With the win, the Tigers are 4-1 this season, 2-1 in Northwest Conference games.
Burlington-Edison will play its next two games in two of the nicest stadiums in the state. The Tigers will face rival Sedro-Woolley Thursday at Joe Martin Stadium in Bellingham, scheduled to start at 1 PM, before wrapping up the week Friday versus the Cascade Bruins at Funko Park in Everett, with the first pitch scheduled for 7 PM.

Borderite Bats Bombard Burlington-Edison 14-6
BURLINGTON, WA - After allowing an average of only three hits and 0.3 walks while winning their first three games with shutouts, six Tiger pitchers were pillaged for 14 runs, 14 walks and nine hits as Blaine blasted Burlington-Edison 14-6 Friday in Northwest Conference high school baseball at Tiger Field.
Things didn’t look bad for Burlington-Edison early in the game, as Asher Moe and Zak Fleshman drew back-to-back bases on balls at the beginning of the second inning, and one out later Beckham Stallings and Garrett Dehon had back-to-back base hits.
Though Moe was out attempting to score on Stallings’ single, Fleshman and Stallings were driven-in by Dehon to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Previewing what was to come, Blaine bounced right back to score three times in the top of the third inning, with a walk and stolen base, followed by an RBI single, two more walks and an error to take a 3-2 lead.
Burlington-Edison battled back in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead. Moe’s double drove-in Wyatt Jacobs to tie the game at three. With Jaxon Brown courtesy running for Moe, Max Herrgesell reached base on a dropped third strike, which also allowed Brown to advance to third base. Max and Jax both scored on a Blaine error and the Tigers led 5-3.
The next two innings were nightmares on Hazel Street for the Tigers, as the Borderites scored 11 unanswered runs to take a 14-5 lead.
The fourth inning was as uncharacteristically ugly as Tiger fans will ever not want to see. Blaine banged-out three base hits and three B-E pitchers issued five bases on balls, including four straight, as the Borderites scored six runs for a 9-5 lead.
The crew from just South of the Canadian border added five fifth inning runs on three singles, two walks, a hit batter and an error to lead 14-5.
Moe’s second RBI double in the seventh inning plated Isiah Aguilar with the Tigers’ sixth run to account for the 14-6 final score.
Burlington-Edison fell to 3-1 on the season, 0-1 in the NWC.

Fleshman’s Second Straight Shutout Secures Tigers’ Third Consecutive Win, 5-0 over Wildcats
BURLINGTON, WA - Six Burlington-Edison batters had base hits in support of Zak Fleshman’s prodigious pitching in a 5-0 win over Oak Harbor Thursday afternoon in high school baseball at Tiger Field.
Fleshman was fantastic, with a complete game win in which he held Oak Harbor to just three hits and struck-out seven Wildcats without allowing a walk.
In two stellar starts, the Tigers’ senior ace has pitched 11 innings, allowed only five hits, struck-out 15 and has yet to give up a base on balls. It’s impossible to improve his ERA (0.00), while his WHIP (0.46) is what pitcher’s dreams are made of.
Max Herrgesell scored the game’s first run after leading-off the third inning with a single to right field, advancing to second on Garrett Dehon’s sacrifice bunt, taking third on a passed ball and scoring on Cash Cullop’s RBI groundout.
Burlington-Edison scored twice in the fourth when Isiah Aguilar and Wyatt Jacobs had back-to-back base hits to open the inning, and after an out and a walk, they were driven-in by Hudson Baker.
The Tigers tallied two more runs in the sixth inning when Asher Moe singled and Beckham Stallings - pinch running for Moe - stole second, advanced to third on Baker’s single, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Garrett Dehon. Baker scored the final B-E run on a wild pitch.
Wyatt Dehon had the only extra base hit for the Tigers with a line drive double in the first inning.
Burlington-Edison is now 3-0 to open the season.

Tigers Turn Two Hits Into 2-0 Triumph Over Trojans
BURLINGTON, WA - Three pitchers, two hits, two errors and a sacrifice bunt were the key ingredients as Burlington-Edison scratched-out a 2-0 win over Meridian Saturday afternoon in their home opener at Tiger Field.
Tigers’ senior starting pitcher Asher Moe, sophomore Max Herrgesell and freshman Ethan Schmitz combined to blank the Trojans on six hits, with five strikeouts and no walks.
Moe was masterful in scattering a single safety in each of the first three innings, striking out two and relying on the left side of his infield defense to end each inning with a groundout.
With runners in scoring position, shortstop Cash Cullop threw-out Meridian base runners for the third out in each of the first two innings and third baseman Isiah Aguilar did the same to tame the Trojans in the third inning.
Hergessell handcuffed Meridian on two hits and a strikeout in his two innings on the mound, and Schmitz earned the win by pitching two innings of two hit relief, striking out the first and last batters he faced while also benefiting from fine fielding that included first baseman Zak Fleshman ending the sixth inning with a 3-6-3 double play.
Meanwhile, Meridian’s Nate Payne was nearly perfect in holding the Tigers hitless and striking out seven in five innings. He allowed just two Tiger baserunners, with a walk and a hit batter.
With Payne relieved in the sixth inning, Burlington-Edison got on the board by playing small ball. Freshman second baseman Garrett Dehon broke-up the no-hitter with a single and one out later was andvanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by his brother, junior Wyatt Dehon.
With two outs, the Tigers took full advantage of virtually the only mistakes Meridian made all afternoon. Garrett Dehon advanced to third on a balk and scored the game’s first run when Aguilar reached base on an error.
Aguilar stole second, sprinted to third on an errant throw, and scored when Wyatt Jacobs singled on a hard hit ball to right field for B-E’s only RBI.
Now 2-0, Burlington-Edison will host Oak Harbor Thursday, March 19 at Tiger Field,

Tigers Terrorize Storm 16-0 With Total Team Effort
BELLINGHAM, WA - Outstanding play in virtually every way by every player boosted the Burlington-Edison Tigers to a season-opening 16-0 shellacking of Squalicum Tuesday afternoon in varsity high school baseball.
The Tigers took advantage of Squalicum’s shortcomings in every way possible, banging out 15 base hits while also drawing 15 bases on balls and playing errorless in the field.
Two senior pitchers who are expected to be Burlington-Edison’s top starters this season combined to strikeout 10 while allowing just three hits and one walk in the game shortened to five innings by the 10 run rule.
Senior shortstop Cash Cullop led the Tigers’ hit parade with a pristine performance at the plate, going 3-3 with a triple, three runs scored, two RBI and two walks.
Cullop led-off the game with a base hit and scored the first run of the season on catcher and cleanup hitter Hudson Baker’s two run double that also plated Wyatt Dehon with the first of his two runs scored. Dehon added two RBI and walked twice.
Isiah Aguilar, who had reached base on an error, and Baker scored on a two run double by Wyatt Jacobs as the Tigers took a 4-0 lead after half an inning.
Burlington-Edison added three runs in the second inning, seven in the third and two in the fourth as starting pitcher Zak Fleshman, and Asher Moe in relief, were silencing the Storm.
Fleshman earned the win with four innings in which he struck-out eight, including six straight, gave-up just two singles, and didn’t allow any walks. He threw 38 of 52 pitches for strikes.
Moe allowed just one single, walked one, and struck out the last two hitters he faced in his one inning of work, throwing strikes on 9 of his 18 pitches.
Other Tigers who were terrific at the plate included Jacobs, who was 2-3 with a double, a triple, and 5 RBI, Baker was 2-4 with 3 RBI and two runs scored, Aguilar drove in a run and scored three times, Fleshman added two hits and two RBI, while Max Herrgesell walked twice and scored two runs.
